Custom Round Components Machined From Rod Stock

Ethylene Atlantic produces precision-turned parts to customer drawings, using lathes to machine rod stock into the specified dimensions and shape.

A round component needs more than the correct outside diameter. Its length, internal opening, and fit with adjoining parts may be just as important. When standard sizes do not meet the design, custom turning allows manufacturers to specify those details for the application.

Our turning and CNC lathe capabilities support custom component production from customer blueprints. We work with defined material and dimensional requirements, helping equipment builders and manufacturers source round parts for new designs, replacement needs, and recurring orders.

What Are Turning and CNC Lathe Machining?

Turning is a machining process in which a lathe rotates the workpiece while a cutting tool removes material. It is commonly used to produce round components with controlled diameters and lengths. A CNC lathe uses programmed movements to guide the machining operation, supporting consistent production of the specified features.

At Ethylene Atlantic, our turning work starts with rod stock. This differs from our CNC milling work, which uses sheet stock. The component drawing determines the required geometry and helps establish the appropriate machining approach. Both services focus on custom parts made to customer specifications.

Applications for Custom Turned Components

Turning is useful when a component needs a round profile with dimensions that suit a particular assembly. An outside diameter may need to fit within an opening, while an internal diameter may need to accommodate another part. The relationship between those dimensions can matter as much as either measurement on its own.

`

Our broader custom component capabilities include bushings, spacers, rings, washers, and bearings. Round designs within these part categories can be candidates for turning, depending on their material and features. Common project requirements include:

  • Custom diameters: Round components sized for a specific equipment or product design.

  • Defined lengths and thicknesses: Parts made to provide the spacing or fit established in the drawing.

  • Internal openings: Components with specified bore dimensions.

  • Replacement parts: New components manufactured from customer-provided drawings.

  • Repeat batches: Multiple parts made to the same dimensional requirements.

We serve manufacturers in industries including chemical processing, electronics, laboratory equipment, healthcare technology, and general industrial manufacturing. The application sets the requirements for the individual part; a component’s round shape alone does not determine which material or tolerances it needs.

Our Turning Process and Materials

A turning project begins with a clear definition of the finished component. Your drawing should identify its outside diameter, overall length, internal dimensions where applicable, and any additional features. Material, grade, tolerances, and surface finish requirements should also be included.

We machine rod stock to the customer’s specifications using lathes. Our wider shop capabilities include drilling, boring, and tapping for parts that require openings or threaded features. The combination of operations needed depends on the drawing.

Working From Your Blueprint

Provide the current drawing revision when requesting a quote. If the part has multiple diameters, a stepped profile, or a critical mating surface, show those requirements clearly. Dimensions that control how the component fits into an assembly deserve particular attention.

A complete drawing also makes repeat orders easier to define. If a replacement part needs a different opening or length, submit that change as part of the updated specification. This gives the machining team a clear reference for the component you need produced.

Plastic and Metal Materials

Our machining material capabilities include:

  • PTFE, PFA, PVDF, and Kel-F.

  • Nylon, acetal, and acrylic.

  • Polyethylene and polypropylene.

  • PVC and CPVC.

  • PEEK and polyimide.

  • Aluminum, brass, and stainless steel.

For a turning project, the specified material, grade, and suitable rod stock should be confirmed during review. A material listed among our capabilities still needs to be evaluated against the requirements of the individual job.

Plastic materials respond differently to temperature and machining conditions, which can affect dimensional behavior. These material-specific considerations matter when defining the fit and tolerances of a turned component. Material selection should account for the intended operating conditions as well as the finished dimensions.

Quality Control and Production Planning

We document our quality processes and offer reports upon request. Finished components are cleaned, deburred, and inspected. Include any project-specific inspection or reporting requirements with your drawing so they can be reviewed before production.

Our support extends from prototypes to production orders. For recurring component needs, blanket orders, JIT delivery options, and custom packaging help customers coordinate supply with their manufacturing schedules.
